Mastering Uncertainty: A Leader’s Guide to Thriving in Chaos
Do you understand what you don’t understand?
Let me explain.
It is far more important to know how to “effectively” deal with situations we don’t understand than those we do.
The world is complex today and it will be even more tomorrow.
You will always have curveballs thrown at you. There will always be situations when you won't have a clue. Such situations not only pose a challenge but also present the opportunity for growth.
This is the real test of your leadership skills. I typically use below framework for situations like these. 👇
👉 Seek goal clarity - Be clear about your desired end state.
👉 Situation awareness - Understand your current state, capabilities, limitations.
👉 Gap identification - At this point, you’ve only identified the problem i.e. the gap. Now you need to find a solution.
👉 Brainstorm - This is the part where we work on finding some possible solutions. Be mindful of below in the brainstorming process:
✅️ Be imaginative - Don’t let your limitations limit your imagination. I wrote about it in my post yesterday, check it out. I'll leave the link in the comment section.
✅️ Scenario building - To navigate through ambiguity, you need to create what if scenarios. What if Plan A fails, what would Plan B be? And if Plan B doesn’t deliver, then how do we fall back on Plan C. Higher the stakes, more rigor your planning needs to go through.
✅️ Enagage expertise - You need to engage with experts and often cross-functional experts for effective problem solving. This is the time to stick your neck out of your own area of expertise and collaborate with other functions. Effective collaboration would depend on your ability to communicate with others in simple and clear language that they can understand. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more questions you ask, the more solutions you explore.
👉 Pick one solution - You brainstormed and found few options. Now you need to pick one. Here you need to objectively analyze the merits/demerits and decide what suits you the best given your situation.
👉 Execute - project manage the execution. Have a daily/weekly/monthly plan of execution.
👉 Track progress - create a feedback mechanism to make sure you’re monitoring your progress and actioning any gaps with immediate effect.
Dealing with uncertainty can be the most unsettling experience. You can bring back some order by following above framework.
